ArPA Activities

2021 On April 22, a virtual tribute evening of Professor Hakob Akiskal took place

Anahit Avanesyan, the RA Minister of Health, Afzal Javed, the President of the World Psychiatric Association, Vigen Sepilyan, the President of the Armenian International Medical Committee, Armen Soghoyan, the President of the Armenian Psychiatric Association welcomed the event. 

Following participants took the floor to tribute Professor Akiskal:

DElie KaramFriend, Partner  (Lebanon),

Driss Mousavi, the President of the International Federation of Psychotherapy  (Morocco) և 1988-2017 Chief Psychiatrist of the RA Ministry of Health Samvel Torosyan (RA).

All the speakers appreciated the role of Knarik Akiskal, the wife of Hakob Akiskal, in the success and creative achievements of the famous scientist.


 Ara Babloyan, the Former RA Minister of Health 1991-1997,   Juan Mezic,  the President of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) (2005-2008) (USA), Costas Fountulakis, the WPA Board Member  (Greece) Solomon Roteman, the Former WPA Board Member  (Republic of South Africa),Tarek Okashan, the Member of the Executive Board of AUA (2008-2014) (Egypt),Norman Sartorius, the Former President of WPA  (1996-1999)  (Switzerland),  Ahmed Okasha, the Former President of WPA (2002-2005)  made speeches, presented memories .

Arthur Mkrtchyan, the Chief of Department of Psychiatry at the Natioanal Institure of Health (NIH), presented that the NIH establishes a postgraduate scholarship named after Professor Hakob Akiskal. 

 Khachatur Gasparyan, the Executive Director of the American Psychiatric Association, 
Head of the Chair of Medical Psychology at the Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU),  concluded the evening with  Vahan Tekeyan's immortal words:
"I feel very rich tonight with a memory of you,
I will think of distributing it to all the poor people. "

Dear compatriots, colleagues,

 

During war and after military actions the Armenian Psychiatric Association was involved in activities targeting:

  • • Wounded servicemen
  • • Evacuated citizens
  • • Families with loses

            • COVID-19 patients

The activities were aimed at mental health maintenance and recovery, coordination of the volunteer work. All actions were coordinated in cooperation with the RA Ministry of Defense, the RA Ministry of Health, the RA Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, municipalities and other non-governmental organizations and representatives of international organizations as well as individuals.

Now, summarizing the work done, compiling the accumulated information, our own and international experience, the Armenian Psychiatric Association presents the following actions to improve the mental health of vulnerable groups and the general public։

 

  1. To initiate situation  analysis and needs assessment as well as database creation of following vulnerable groups:
  • • Injured
  • • Families of the missing
  • • Families of victims
  • • Captives and their families
  • • Evacuated citizens
  • • War participants with mental health problems
  1. To initiate mapping of organizations who provide mental health services (Activities / Capacity, Geography, etc.).
  2. To establish general network among mental health services in all regions of the Republic of Armenia based on the needs assessment and in accordance with the existing resources, to provide the necessary assistance to the above-mentioned groups of population.

4. To organize licensing / accreditation process for clinical psychologists.

5. To develop Mental Health Maintenance and Improvement Strategy for years 2021-2025, and to take measures to ensure fulfillment of the above mentioned Strategy

6. To ensure continues work of the psychological support hotline (060-834777), which will provide emergency psychological help and will connect population with appropriate mental health services.

7. To develop strategy to influence public consciousness to reduce the psychological effects of war and to increase psychological endurance and coping mechanisms.

8. To organize trainings for mass media representatives to ensure appropriate communication of potentially harmful information.

9. To foresee vocational training programs for psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers to deal with postwar situation.

10. To review university educational and training programs for mental health professionals and social workers

11. To foresee vocational training courses for teachers and kindergarten educators on information transfer approaches.

12. To initiate development and adaptation of guidelines for mental health professionals who work with losses, with people with injuries, with the displaced population and with others who need mental health support.

13. To work for stigma reduction.

14. To organize scientific research in parallel with the work with the above-mentioned vulnerable groups.

15.To establish a Coordination Council, the main objectives of which will be data management, coordination of the planned activities, as well as to publication and dissemination of  the electronic bulletins on the activities of international and local mental health and humanitarian organizations.

 

We call on all interested state non-governmental and  other organizations to as well as individuals, to become a part of the mentioned activities. As mental health professionals, we will do our best։ we are ready to cooperate with all organizations and individuals and to discuss any proposal for the solution of the mentioned problems. The sixth edition of the IMPACT Mental Health Forum

The sixth edition of the IMPACT Mental Health Forum, a meeting co-organized by the World Association of Social Psychiatry, Armenian Psychiatric Association and Sanofi’s Access to Medicines Department was held from Tuesday 12th to Wednesday 13th May 2015 at the Marriott-Armenia hotel, in Yerevan, Armenia. The focus of the meeting was: “Collecting evidence to help improve access to mental health care. Why, what, when & how to assess?”

The 5th World Congress of Asian Psychiatry (WCAP), Fukuoka, Japan on 3-6 March 2015

On March 3-6 the 5th World Congress of Asian Psychiatry (WCAP) took place in Fukuoka, Japan. Armenia and Armenian Psychiatric Association were presented by Khachatur Gasparyan, the Secretary General of ArPA. The topic of Mr.Gasparyan`s presentation was “How the earthquake related defending mechanisms reveal the Genocide psychological trauma.” In particularly Mr. Gasparyan proposed the new research question, whether the 2011 earthquake in Japan revealed the Hiroshima and Nagasaki trauma memories.

International Forum on Innovation in Mental Health

During the Forum three reports were presented and discussed:

  • Integrating the response to mental disorders and other chronic diseases in health care systems — health-system based strategies for organizing and delivering comprehensive and integrated care for mental disorders and other chronic health conditions;
  • Innovation in deinstitutionalization: a WHO expert survey — innovative methodologies for shifting from hospital to community-based care, including operational approaches for establishing community mental health services and promoting social inclusion;
  • Social determinants of mental health — population-based strategies that can be implemented through health and non-health sectors to reduce the impact of social determinants on mental ill-health and to promote mental health.

The objective of this first public meeting was to generate cross fertilization between the groups of experts involved in the production of these reports and everyone wishing to participate in the process, and allow key global mental health leaders to present lectures on these issues.

WPA Thematic Conference on “Mental Health and Mental Illnesses: Focusing on Eurasia”

Thematic Conference of World Psychiatric Association (WPA) (www.wpanet.org) on “Mental Health and Mental Illnesses: Focusing on Eurasia” was held in Yerevan on August 29-31, 2013. Local organizers of conference were: Armenian Psychiatric Association (ArPA), Armenian Medical Association and S. Kh.Avdalbekyan National Institute of Health of Republic of Armenia.

The president of Conference - Pedro Ruiz (USA), President of WPA, the director of conference – Armen Soghoyan, President of ArPA.

The opening ceremony was held at main hall of G. Sundukyan National Academic Theatre on August 29th, 2013 at 17:30. Minister of Health of Republic of Armenia honored the ceremony with his presence and delivered a welcoming speech.
Programme of conference included 8 keynote lectures, 27 symposiums and workshops. Full programme is available at www.apnet.am/wpa2013.

317 mental health specialists from 34 countries were present on conference. In the number of worldwide known scientists were, in particular:

  • Nicolai Neznanov (Russia), President of World Association for Dynamic Psychiatry (WADP) (Prof. Neznanov was represented by Anna Vasileva)
  • Afzal Javed (Great Britain), President of World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR)
  • Driss Moussaoui (Marocco), Immediate Past President of World Association of Social Psychiatry(WASP)
  • Michael Kidd (Australia)President of World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA)
  • Pedro Ruiz (USA), President of World Psychiatric Association (WPA)

During the conference was held the meeting of mentioned 5 world organizations presidents, and Yerevan Declaration of “Cooperation for improving mental health” was signed.

“Mental Health in Armenia” Seminar for Mass Media Representatives

The seminar was organized by the Armenian Psychiatric Association (ArPA), together with the Youth Foundation of Armenia and with the methodological support of the Ministry of Health of Armenia.
