The New October issue of «World Psychiatry»

''Work with People with Mental Health Problems'' training in Gyumri

On July 13th, 2016  Armen Soghoyan, President of Armenian Psychiatric Association and Lilit Baghdasaryan, Psychologist of Centre for Psychosocial Recovery conducted lecture on peculiarities of  work with people with mental health problems for staff of Gyumri Boarding House for Elderly and Disabled. The course was organized by the National Institute of Social Research and was designed for professionals providing services to the elderly and persons with disabilities, managers, social workers, psychologists, nurses and social providers and volunteers. Align with Gyumri Boarding House staff the Caritas NGO, Meghvik youth center and other representatives of NGOs operating in the region were present.

Training on Suicidal Psychology Research Methodology and Methods

On July 12th 2016 the Analytical Center for Suicide Prevention “ANTISUICID” hosted another practical training on suicidal psychology research methodology and methods. The training was intended for psychiatrists and psychologists who work with groups of people with high-risk of suicidal behavior Participants were introduced to the interpretation of key terms of suicide psychology, methodology of identification of suicidal behavior, practical application of the suicide psychology research methods. The seminar was conducted by Kamo Vardanyan, Professor and Doctor of Psychological Science.

 

During the meeting the contemporary problems of the suicide prevention were discussed. Lilit Baghdasaryan, Director of the Analytical Center for Suicide Prevention “ANTISUICID” stressed the importance of practical workshops for Mass media representatives on correct interpretation and elimination of destructive information.

Summarizing the Month of Mental Health in Armenia

This year, as usual, starting from October 1st Armenian Psychiatric Association has announced a Month of Mental Health in Armenia and published the list of events dedicated to the Month of Mental Health. The Month of Mental Health united all mental health professionals of Armenia in various activities.

  • On October 1-2, International scientific conference on “Contemporary Issues and Challenges of Inclusive Education” was organized by Department of Inclusive Education, Armenian State Pedagogical University named after Khachatur Abovyan,.
  • Parallel on October 1, in Business Centre of American University of Armenia there was an official opening of RECOVERY COLLEGE. The presenters were ArPA President Armen Soghoyan and Head of Recovery College, Lilit Baghdasaryan, MS, PhD. In open lecture they describe the RECOVERY COLLEGE as a  program designed not only for people with mental health disorders or their relatives,  and all who are interested in mental health in general but also for mental health professional as a course of continues education. RECOVERY COLLEGE  is not only a model of training provision but also is a type of psychological support provision which gives an opportunity to get psychological knowledge and practical skills for mental health problem management through understanding the “Self”, discovering personal resources, becoming and expert of their own problem, redefining the meaning of life. 
  • On October 9 and October 12, align with proposal of World Social Psychiatry Association several non-governmental organizations (Centre for  Psychosocial Regulation, "MAPLE LEAFS" Armenian-Canadian Medical Clinic and "INTRA" Mental Health Center (Of Seda Ghazarian Memorial Foundation)) provided free of charge mental health services (psychological and psychiatric consultancy) to dozens of clients.
  • Dozens of pregnant women underwent free of charge training for emotional regulation of pregnancy.
  • On October 10 in cooperation with NKR Psychiatric Association and Centre for Psychosocial Regulation “Empathy” the Scientific Conference was organized in Stepanakert, NKR. ArPA and NKR Association of Psychiatrists and Psychologists had announced the Joint Declaration of NKR Psychiatrists’ And Psychologists’ Association and Armenian Psychiatric Association Dedicated to World Mental Health Day
  •  On the same day there was a free workshop dedicated to a World Mental Health Day at the Centre for Psychosocial Recovery.
  • On October 23-25, Biennial Meeting of Armenian Psychiatric Association co -sponsored by World Psychiatric Association, "Dignity in Mental Health", October 23-25, Yerevan within the framework of 5th International Conference: The current issues in Theoretical and Applied Psychology /Faculty of Philosophy and Psychology/ took place in Yerevan State University/. The focus of the conference was the concept of global Mental Health, development and improvement of Mental Health Services in Armenia, highlighting dignity in MH. One of the conference days was dedicated to a special symposium on “Reforms in MH care in Armenia” organized by World Health Organization.
  • On October 30 the Helsinki Citizens` Assembly Vanadzor Office organized listening on 2014-2019 Mental Health Protection strategy implementations and realization.

OCTOBER- MONTH OF MENTAL HEALTH

Starting from October 1st Armenian Psychiatric Association has announced a Month of Mental Health in Armenia.

Below is a list of events dedicated to the Month of Mental Health.

1. October 1-2, International scientific conference “Contemporary Issues and Challenges of Inclusive Education”, organizer, Armenian State Pedagogical University named after Khachatur Abovyan. 

2. October 1, Official opening of RECOVERY COLLEGE. Presenters: ArPA President Armen Soghoyan and Head of Recovery College, Lilit Baghdasaryan, MS, PhD.

3. October 9, Press Conference

7. Discussions of Mental Health Protection and Improvement Strategy implementation.

8. Workshop for Mass Media representatives.

9. October 23, In frames of Governmental Strategy on Alternative Care, the first Care House for mental health patients will be open in Spitak.   

10. The sixth edition of the IMPACT Mental Health Forum

The sixth edition of the IMPACT Mental Health Forum, a meeting co-organized by the World Association of Social Psychiatry, Armenian Psychiatric Association and Sanofi’s Access to Medicines Department was held from Tuesday 12th to Wednesday 13th May 2015 at the Marriott-Armenia hotel, in Yerevan, Armenia. The focus of the meeting was: “Collecting evidence to help improve access to mental health care. Why, what, when & how to assess?”

Conference dedicated to 270 anniversary of Philippe Pinel, French physician and one of the founders of psychiatry

The 5th World Congress of Asian Psychiatry (WCAP), Fukuoka, Japan on 3-6 March 2015

On March 3-6 the 5th World Congress of Asian Psychiatry (WCAP) took place in Fukuoka, Japan. Armenia and Armenian Psychiatric Association were presented by Khachatur Gasparyan, the Secretary General of ArPA. The topic of Mr.Gasparyan`s presentation was “How the earthquake related defending mechanisms reveal the Genocide psychological trauma.” In particularly Mr. Gasparyan proposed the new research question, whether the 2011 earthquake in Japan revealed the Hiroshima and Nagasaki trauma memories. 

NKR and RA Ministries of Social Affairs and ArPA joint conference

On November 21, 2014 in Stepanakert the joint conference of  NKR and RA Ministries of Social Affairs and ArPA took place.

On October 28. 2014 WHO Country Office hosted meeting of ArPA Board and Executive members with Matthijs Muijen, Head of European Regional Programme Office for Mental Health Stuart Bell, Chief Executive of Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and Virginia Adomaitienė, Chief Psychiatrist of the Republic of Lithuania, Board Member of Lithuanian Psychiatric Association who were invited to Armenia by Armen Muradyan, Minister of Health, Republic of Armenia.

International Forum on Innovation in Mental Health

During the Forum three reports were presented and discussed:

  • Integrating the response to mental disorders and other chronic diseases in health care systems — health-system based strategies for organizing and delivering comprehensive and integrated care for mental disorders and other chronic health conditions;
  • Innovation in deinstitutionalization: a WHO expert survey — innovative methodologies for shifting from hospital to community-based care, including operational approaches for establishing community mental health services and promoting social inclusion;
  • Social determinants of mental health — population-based strategies that can be implemented through health and non-health sectors to reduce the impact of social determinants on mental ill-health and to promote mental health.

The objective of this first public meeting was to generate cross fertilization between the groups of experts involved in the production of these reports and everyone wishing to participate in the process, and allow key global mental health leaders to present lectures on these issues.

WPA Thematic Conference on “Mental Health and Mental Illnesses: Focusing on Eurasia”

Thematic Conference of World Psychiatric Association (WPA) (www.wpanet.org) on “Mental Health and Mental Illnesses: Focusing on Eurasia” was held in Yerevan on August 29-31, 2013. Local organizers of conference were: Armenian Psychiatric Association (ArPA), Armenian Medical Association and S. Kh.Avdalbekyan National Institute of Health of Republic of Armenia.

The president of Conference - Pedro Ruiz (USA), President of WPA, the director of conference – Armen Soghoyan, President of ArPA.

The opening ceremony was held at main hall of G. Sundukyan National Academic Theatre on August 29th, 2013 at 17:30. Minister of Health of Republic of Armenia honored the ceremony with his presence and delivered a welcoming speech.
Programme of conference included 8 keynote lectures, 27 symposiums and workshops. Full programme is available at www.apnet.am/wpa2013.

317 mental health specialists from 34 countries were present on conference. In the number of worldwide known scientists were, in particular:

  • Nicolai Neznanov (Russia), President of World Association for Dynamic Psychiatry (WADP) (Prof. Neznanov was represented by Anna Vasileva)
  • Afzal Javed (Great Britain), President of World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR)
  • Driss Moussaoui (Marocco), Immediate Past President of World Association of Social Psychiatry(WASP)
  • Michael Kidd (Australia)President of World Organization of Family Doctors (WONCA)
  • Pedro Ruiz (USA), President of World Psychiatric Association (WPA)

During the conference was held the meeting of mentioned 5 world organizations presidents, and Yerevan Declaration of “Cooperation for improving mental health” was signed.

“Mental Health in Armenia” Seminar for Mass Media Representatives

The seminar was organized by the Armenian Psychiatric Association (ArPA), together with the Youth Foundation of Armenia and with the methodological support of the Ministry of Health of Armenia.
